I Want A Cuter Tip, Doctor

With nose jobs a top facial procedure, more are going ahead.

Here are the top 10 things you should know:

  •    Time away from work or school:

Seven to 10 days should do the trick.

  •    Duration of procedure:

About one hour.

  •    Anesthesia:

Under anesthesia, you’ll have no pain or awareness, but will just drift off to sleep. The most modern anesthetics allow nose surgery patients to easily waken within minutes and without sickness.

  •     Recovery  room:

About an hour in a monitored recovery room before being released to somebody who can do the driving. Somebody must stay with you that first night.

  •    Removal of protective cast:

Five days after rhinoplasty surgery, the cast comes off. Functional patients (deviated septum or turbinate reduction surgery) have nose packing removed in five days.

  •    You’ll have some slight bruising & swelling:

To cope, keep your head above your heart; cold compresses are good as is a bag of frozen peas. Plus, no eye glasses for several weeks. Two to three days for contacts.

  •    What people say about having a nose job:

Most say they were congested and had some swelling around the face and eyes. Functional nose surgery patients will have some bleeding from the nostrils into an absorbent pad. The KNA (Kotler Nasal Airway) promotes easy breathing and good healing practices.

  •    Follow up:

After the first week, most can go back, work or  to your usual activities except for exercise and working out. Special makeup is available for those who still have bruising. Glasses are suspended from the forehead for five weeks after surgery; glasses must not sit on the bridge of the nose.

  •    Working out:

Hold off for three to four weeks. Working out can lead to more swelling, bruising or bleeding.

  •    After 10 days:

For functional patients, clear breathing is gained after a month. Functional and rhinoplasty patients have twice weekly checkups the first month after surgery. Post-op pictures are taken at three months so that you have a complete set of before and after nose job pictures.
